Shell says its first line of response is to use its own resources and avoid using chemicals that are “more toxic” to humans.

In a statement on Tuesday, the company said it has been using the chemical bromine for decades, which it claims is a “minor” ingredient in its Shell products and has been the basis of its chemical-free line of products for nearly a century.

The statement says the company is “committed to maintaining the safety of our products” and has a long history of testing products and testing procedures for the development of safe, high-performing, and biodegradable alternatives to petroleum products.

Shell has a total of 7 billion barrels of crude oil, more than 70% of which is used as crude.
