It was tested in a clinical trial at St Mary’s Hospital in London in September, and has been approved by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

“We’re really excited to be able to share Aldo-3 with the British people for the first time,” Dr Joanna O’Brien, chief executive of Chemotherapy UK, told RTE.

Chemotherapy UK is also looking at developing its own version of the drug, but that would not be the first treatment that the firm has developed.”

The company said it was currently exploring the development of another drug.
